This is not surprising, considering that the Toyota onboard computer can illuminate the check engine light for any of thousands of conditions - yes, thousands. The check engine light can be illuminated for something as seemingly trivial as a faulty gas cap, through spark plugs problems, faulty ignition coils, sensor issues, engine misfires, up to and including catalytic converter failure. However, if the check engine light is flashing, you should consider this a very serious matter, and pull out of the traffic, park in a safe spot, and turn off the engine.
